Angi Pearce

Angi Pearce has been writing stories, poems (and songs) since she was in her early teens. She writes mainly for the younger audience with the aim to entertain and instil in young readers and listeners a love for literature. Angi teaches at a school for children with special needs and has a captive audience for each story that she writes. She has also had a couple of teaching resource books published as well as some articles published in the NZ Education Gazette.
Angi lives in Hawkes Bay with her husband Phil. She has two adult sons, three adult step children and four grandchildren.

Do you try more to be original, or to deliver to readers what they want?

I mostly write for a young audience, 2-8 year olds. I like to write in rhyme, as understanding and recognising rhyming words is one of the foundations of literacy. My ideas come from things that have happened or (sometimes) weird dreams I have!

What is it about your chosen genre that you love?

I love bringing a smile to the faces of children and giving them a passion for books and reading.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Sometimes based on their character, the meaning of the names, or names that fit with the flow of the story.

What was the first book that made you cry?

Gone With The Wind

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

I would have taken writing courses at university when I was younger.

Have you Googled yourself? Did you find out anything interesting?

Yes…and no, nothing interesting.

Are there any secrets in your books that only a few people will find? Can you tell us one? Or give us any hints?

Yes….in my first book, past pet cats are hidden on every page.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym? Why?

No… I am me and I embrace who I am.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

One, but many more ideas waiting to emerge.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters of the opposite sex?

Men are from Mars….who really understands how they think?
